Linen

IMG_2291 IMG_2294

Linen is one of my favorite fabrics for summer.  While a lot of summer dresses can be made in cheap looking and thin fabric, linen is a sturdy fabric that holds up well throughout the day.  Despite its thick texture, it doesn’t cling to your body but dries quickly in an unfortunate case of perspiration.  This linen fit and flare dress from GAP is an absolute dream.  It comes in a variety of colors and patterns and I love a good fit and flare silhouette.

Memorial Day Weekend

IMG_1655.jpg

Happy Friday loves!  Sorry for the mini hiatus last week.  Sometimes my work weeks can just get away from me, and last week was my little sister’s college graduation so we had a full agenda!  But today is the perfect time to start back up again, with Memorial Day being the unofficial start to summer (aka my favorite season!).  My family has a history of public service, and along with the barbecues and the summer concerts, my hometown parade is one of my favorite honorary traditions.

I just had to scoop up this darling fit and flare dress when I spotted it at Macy’s a few months ago.  I instantly knew it would be perfect for the summer’s first official long weekend.  It goes great with boat shoes for walking around comfortably in or participating in some MDW volleyball action, but also looks great with my favorite wedges for dinner.  I love how I can always count on Macy’s for classic American brands and style year round.  Tommy Hilfiger is one of my favorite brands to shop at the closest mall, and you can always find such great deals with Macy’s coupons!  (Mom and Nana, you taught me well).

Turquoise Accents

IMG_9577 IMG_9591 IMG_9578

This week’s gray rain has really been getting me down, so I decided this was the perfect time to start day dreaming about light and breezy summer outfits!

IMG_9603 IMG_9589 IMG_9569 IMG_9597

I love pairing turquoise accents together (usually this necklace, bracelet, and heels) as I think turquoise is pretty much the perfect accent color.  I last did this last year here with this fun coral number and I think it works just as well with white!  My pieces are all older (which just shows that turquoise can stand the test of time), so I’ve linked to similar options below!  I don’t currently own a pair of turquoise earrings, but I am loving these Kendra Scott ones on MAJOR sale, as well as all of her turquoise items!

Beat the Heat

Blue and yellow have always seemed like an easy color combination to me.  Together they grace the Massachusetts’ State Flag and make up my hometown’s colors.  This lightweight skirt and sleeveless chambray are perfect for hot August afternoons, with their breezy fabrics and light colors.

Sunshine Skirt

IMG_7203 IMG_7204 IMG_7219 IMG_7225 IMG_7255

Here’s the weird thing about today’s post: I don’t even like the color yellow.  Yeah, I know.  Blame it on my inner cynical Bostonian, but the color yellow is usually way too aggressively happy and obnoxiously bright for my liking.  Yet, despite this strong opinion I’ve held onto for years, I love this skirt.  This shade of yellow is soft and buttery enough to brighten up any outfit just the right amount.  I’m also partial to pale yellow paired with olive green, so just add in some delicate gold accents and preppy loafers and this outfit is an all-star in my book.

Poolside

Ever since I was twelve years old and my parents built this pool in our backyard, summer afternoons have always meant poolside gatherings to me.  Whether it’s at my parents’ pool that I grew up swimming in with my cousins, or at a hotel rooftop on Sunday afternoons; summer = nonstop pool parties.  While swimsuits are always on my radar by February, I tend to forget about cover-ups until the first party each season when I realize that I have nothing to wear there.  Luckily, one of my all-time favorite stores J.Crew has a great selection of cute cover-ups that I’ve had a lot of success with this year (last seen in this previous post here, and you can shop the sale cover-ups here).

I cannot say enough good things about Lands’ End tote bags.  My mom has used them for as long as I can remember, and they last forever.  My sister and I have started our own little collections now too, and they are a great pool/beach bag that we know we’ll use for years to come.

MFA

IMG_6698 IMG_7694 IMG_7710

As I mentioned on Instagram earlier this week, the Museum of Fine Arts is my absolute favorite museum in Boston.  As a self-taught artist with a penchant for American Art, the MFA is naturally one of my favorite attractions in the city.  Housed inside a gorgeous Neoclassical building is one of the largest and most comprehensive art collections in the Americas.  The exterior (where I took my outfit photos) is majestic and stately; like a castle dropped in the middle of Huntington Avenue.  Their sprawling Art of the Americas wing is absolutely transcendent, and features everything from the gorgeous portraits of John Singer Sargent to the New England landscapes of Fitz Henry Lane and Thomas Sully’s Passage of the Delaware (you really cannot escape Colonial History in this city, no matter how hard you may try).  The Contemporary Art Collection is another can’t miss, showcasing neon lights, Andy Warhol, and modernist sculpture alike.  By far my favorite room in the MFA is the Impressionism and Post-Impressionism Gallery.  Impressionism is one of my personal favorite art movements and the MFA has a spectacular collection of some of my favorite artists (Van Gogh, Degas), and one of the largest collections of Monet outside of France, which is pretty rad, especially for a Monet aficionado like myself (isn’t everyone a Monet aficionado at heart?).  With such an enormous and extensive collection of art that transcends time and geography, I’m constantly finding paintings I had never seen before and falling in love with recent acquisitions.  This time I happened to see Expulsion from the Garden of Eden for the first time ever and it totally took my breath away.  I stood in front of it in awe for a good five minutes before I could even begin to go further in depth into its beauty (and then later went back for another look after we had already left the wing… Sorry, Mac).

IMG_7702 IMG_7762 IMG_7752 IMG_7739

“I am not what I am”

The MFA also has a constant rotation of fun, relevant, and important Exhibitions come through.  Two of my past favorites were Hippie Chic and Hollywood Glamour– both fashion exhibits that showed fashion of a particular era as a crucial element of art.  Naturally, I was in heaven at both of them.  Until August 9th, the museum is home to an extensive collection of works by Hokusai, the internationally renowned Japanese artist.  Almost everyone will recognize Under the Wave off Kanagawa, his most famous piece.  I was so excited to view his extensive works that spread over his lengthy career, and the exhibit most certainly did not disappoint.

The other girl in the pictures is my sister/best friend Michaela, frequently referred to as ‘Mac’.  We do pretty much everything together (within reason, as she actually lives on the North Shore), including museum trips.  Sisters make for perfect traveling companions, as you’ll always have someone who is down to talk pretentiously about paintings and then turn around and take artsy instagrams on the staircase.  It’s also pretty sweet to have someone snap a candid of you across the room or not judge you when you want to go back to your hotel and change outfits in the middle of the day.  She’s also my number one photographer and a pretty great person in general, so since she’s such a major part of my life she’ll probably make quite a few appearances around here in the future!

I shared this skirt a couple months ago in this post, and it quickly became one of my favorites.  I love the shape, detail, color, and versatility of it.  It can easily be taken from day to night, or from work to weekend.  I also love how a change in top can totally change the vibe of the outfit.  I would also like to take this opportunity to apologize for the fact that this bucket bag is in approximately 75% of my outfits.  It’s just so great that I use it all the time.  I love that its so on trend, but the nude color goes with almost every outfit.  It’s a great every day bag- I throw all of my stuff in without it bulging at all or losing its shape with use!

Safari Room

IMG_6568 IMG_6584

Hello again, world.  It’s been a while.  After a very painful computer free week, I finally got my laptop back and am ready to get back into the blogging world.  Last week I was able to fit in a quick getaway to Newport, Rhode Island which is one of my favorite summer vacation spots in New England.  One of my favorite restaurants in Newport is The Safari Room at OceanCliff.  The menu is absolutely extraordinary and the views of Narragansett Bay simply cannot be beat.  Another reason I can’t get enough of it is the safari-chic decor, which happens to be a huge weakness of mine when done tastefully (this is).

The day I was there happened to be a bit overcast, but that didn’t stop me from exploring the grounds and taking in the views.  I wore this Milly for Kohl’s dress with my favorite white denim jacket and it was absolutely perfect for lunch by the water.  I love a good fit and flare dress, and this gorgeous blue Grecian style print just makes it so much better.  It’s one of those dresses that I look down out during the day and start smiling because it is just SO PRETTY.
