Breaking Plaid

To file under “shows B is still trying to convince me to watch”: Breaking Bad.  Plaid, on the other hand, is something we can both agree on.  When we first started dating, B exclusively wore flannels and jeans on the weekends, and his car even has plaid seats.  Needless to say, I think B was born for fall.

On that same subject, I raid Old Navy for updated flannels every September when the cool air rolls back in again.  (If you don’t believe me you can see examples here, here, herehere, here, and here.  Phew!)  While most flannels have some navy in them (at least the ones I gravitate towards!), I loved that this one was exclusively white and navy.  I originally planned on wearing it with my purple pants, but after I ordered these olive ones I knew they would be perfect together.

Colors of Fall in Keene

Happy Friday everyone!  Today’s outfit is just celebrating all the beautiful colors of fall.  You may remember last year I wore a lot of deep jewel tones throughout the fall (almost exclusively aubergine, burgundy, olive, and navy), but this year I’ve been doing a lot of matching my outfit to the colors outside.  Over the weekend, while B and I spent a few hours in Keene, NH I wore purple, a color I have always associated with October and Halloween!

Do you have any fun plans for the weekend?  This is the first time in about four years that I’m not going to Manhattan for the New Yorker Festival, but I have a very different trip planned instead :).  Make sure you follow along on Instagram (@thesolcompass) and Snapchat (@chummer17) to see where!

Hello everyone, happy hump day!  I have such a weakness for a great matching outfit, and so the black and olive hues in this ensemble are right up my alley.

Matching

Fun Fact about yours truly: I am a sucker for anything that is perfectly matched.  On Monday when this post went live, a friend came up to me and said “I know why you love that skirt so much-because it matches your hair!”

She may have a point.  My suede skirt that I love so dearly does match my hair, just like today’s blazer so perfectly matches my skirt and my glasses match my top here.  Matching is one of those things I know I can always fall back on, because it pulls a look together even when I’m not 100% feeling the ensemble.  This plaid skirt could go with so many things, but on a Monday morning you can bet I’ll fall right back into the routine of matching black and red (the color combo I’ve apparently loved this winter time and time again…)

Flannel and Leather

Flannel and Leather Black Zara Faux Leather Mini Skirt Gray Old Navy Flannel

The fact that suede and leather (of both real and fake variety) are everywhere this season is a dream come true for me.  Leather has been a staple of my wardrobe for as long as I can remember, and I love embracing it in all its incarnations- well past the traditional leather jacket!  After the pencil skirt and midi skirt, I have finally broken out the (faux) leather mini skirt and am so excited to find other ways to style it!

I buy at least one Old Navy flannel every fall.  They are my absolute favorites, and I don’t even have to feel guilty about adding yet another to my wardrobe because of how affordable they are!  I love the contrast the loose flannel gives the tight mini skirt- all about contrast this fall (as evident here, here, and here).  I usually order the tall length, partially because I have a long torso but also because I think they look great with a tunic-esque vibe, especially if you plan on wearing them over leggings!

Pumped for Fall

Adam Lippes for Target pumps Banana Republic Faux Leather Pleated Midi Skirt, Adam Lippes for Target Plaid Pumps

These Adam Lippes for Target pumps are closely edging in on my Prabal Gurung for Target heels for favorite pair in my closet.  The silhouette is perfect, the pattern is fun, they’re comfortable, and they’re only $40- what more could you want in a pair of heels?!

Two stores I frequently visit for office-appropriate clothing are The Limited and Banana RepublicThe Limited for their timeless pieces that will go with any and everything for years to come (like this blouse), and Banana Republic for their chic, office-appropriate interpretations of seasonal trends (like this faux leather pleated skirt).
