Burgundy Skirt: Round Two

This burgundy skirt has been on repeat with this warm weather lately!  The color absolutely screams ‘fall’, but I get to hold onto precious skirt days for a little while longer!  I love this vibrant blue top paired with the dark hued skirt, especially while colors in New England are out in full force! It was actually a bright blue sky situated next to some turning leaves that inspired me to pair these two colors together.  I don’t know how anyone can spend time in New England during the fall and not feel inspired and in love with the beauty of nature!Burgundy Skirt | The Sol Compass Blue and Burgundy on The Sol Compass fresh color combinations for fall on The Sol Compass love this color combo on The Sol Compass Burgundy skirt for fall on The Sol Compass Burgundy and Blue on The Sol Compass

Fall In Love

IMG_8335 IMG_8326

One of my favorite color combinations for fall is blush and burgundy.  I love the romantic vibe they give off together and the way the blush can lighten up a dark and bold autumn color like burgundy and give it a fresh feminine twist.  I try to avoid matching my shoes and my bag too frequently, since it seems safe and predictable, but I love the way the brown in my accessories anchors the whole outfit in the current season.

Transition

Collegiate Striped Skirt on The Sol Compass

With temperatures in the 80s and 90s this coming week, summer in New England is definitely not over!  Dressing for the heat can be such a challenge with stores and magazines inundating us with fall fashions from every direction.  With the pieces I buy and just cannot wait to wear, I like to match them with summer appropriate pieces like a simple tank to preview the fall fashion, but not sweat to death in the humidity and heat.  This fun blue striped skirt and open-toe booties make for great transition pieces, since the combination of the skirt length and the open toe keep things a bit cooler than their fall/winter counterparts.

Crunch ‘n Brunch

IMG_1489

This past weekend brought around the most perfect fall weather anyone could ask for.  I love a casual weekend look that can go from brunch to a walk through the park (and crunching leaves!) without an outfit change.  I’m hoping it wasn’t the last weekend I could rely on my favorite quilted vest to display my favorite sweater details (like these suede elbow patches), but I’m afraid it may have been.  This week I resolve to go on a hunt for warmer clothes, but not without mourning my fall favorites a bit first!

Rain Storm in Fall Form

IMG_2336

An autumnal storm like last night’s is the perfect excuse to stay inside for an evening with a few of my favorite comforting items.  “Heart of the City” is one of my all-time favorite re-reads.  Ariel Sabar uses an intriguing summary of environmental psychology as an introduction for his collection of true short stories, documenting nine couple’s first encounters in New York City.  Its juxtaposition with science and romance make it easy for me to come back to time and time again, especially on simple, rainy nights in.IMG_2330

Leftover from my last trip to New York City is this marvelous African tea from Ambessa.  Given as a gift after a delightful meal at Red Rooster by the remarkable Marcus Samuelsson, this Safari breakfast blend stays true to the passion and quality Marcus so highly values in all of his endeavors.  To boot, every Ambessa purchase gives back to a charity that brings clean water to a community in need.

The siren mug from Starbucks embodies one of my favorite Starbucks traditions of the romantic sea and makes me long for summer, but balances with cool tones of fall and is the perfect container for a hot cup of tea.

If you are anything like me, seasonal candles are one of your top-purchased decor items every time the weather turns.  I love how this Vanilla Chai candle from Bath and Body Works embodies the fall atmosphere with the vanilla, chai, and subtle cinnamon notes in a welcoming and warm aroma. It’s a great way to enhance the natural scents of apples and pumpkins while maintaining the seasonal appeal.  The adorable mason jar can only add to the appeal!

A Beacon (Hill) of Hope

IMG_2188The elegant neighborhood of Beacon Hill is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Boston.  The gas lamps, cobblestone streets, and red brick sidewalks make up the most quintessential historic Boston image in the most charming way possible.  This quaint and picturesque “Old Boston” neighborhood can only be enhanced by fall’s vibrant foliage, and made for such a fun shoot location.

My favorite neighborhood deserved nothing less than a few of my favorite wardrobe pieces, including colored skinny jeans, heeled booties, a clutch, and, of course, plenty of sparkle.

Head of the Charles Regatta

This past weekend was the 50th Head Of The Charles Regatta and in true New England fashion, the other Bostonians and myself gathered on the banks of the Charles for two days of racing and other cherised collegiate traditions.  Some of my favorite merchandisers included Naked juice, Brooks Brothers, and an intriguing Boston 2024 booth campaigning for their summer olympics bid! Of course, nothing compares to the Harvard campus in autumn, and the foliage was the perfect backdrop for such an esteemed event.

Here are a few pictures taken with my iPhone 6, I am beyond obsessed with the 8-megapixel camera and the quality pictures it produces!

An Apple Agenda

IMG_2077

With so many apples left over from my apple picking session earlier this week, I could think of no better way to spend my Friday than whipping up every apple concoction I could think of.  I started off with some apple sauce, then moved on to an apple cobbler, and finally an apple smoothie to finish off the evening.

Apple Cobbler

Traditionally, apple desserts are limited to pies and crisps, but I found this recipe for a peach cobbler over the summer, and it was so delicious I couldn’t resist trying it for apples as well.  I substituted a cup of cinnamon sugar to sprinkle over the apples to add a bit of bonus fall flair, and lined the baking dish with olive oil instead of butter to make it (at least a little more) guilt free!  Finally I topped off the finished product with whipped cream and caramel sauce to make a delightful fall dessert!

Free Fall-ing

IMG_1029

An autumn afternoon spent apple picking is always at the top of everyone’s To-Do list when October rolls around.  With the unseasonably warm climate, all I needed for a fun day of hiking and apple picking was my ever-versatile quilted vest thrown over a reliable flannel (nothing says fall in New England quite like a plaid flannel!) These Aerosoles boots are hands down the most comfortable pair of boots I own.  They come equipped with standard Aerosoles technology; including cushioned insoles, breathable lining, and an expandable calf fit!  They are an absolute necessity for me on any fall adventure that requires a bit of extra walking or uneven terrain.  Later this week expect to see some recipes I made from the abundance of apples I gathered today!

Fall Layers

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall” F. Scott Fitzgerald

IMG_0563

In traditional “back to school” mindset, everything starts over in the fall.  Now that it feels like autumn is finally here, I can finally start to break out all of the layers I have been waiting to wear for months now.

A quilted vest is definitely one of my staples for New England autumns.  I love how it can add an extra layer of warmth while simultaneously showing off the layer underneath in a way a jacket cannot.  For my fun and playful weekend look, I kept the colors simple and consistent throughout by staying with my sweater’s theme of navy and green throughout.  I added these bold green earrings and simple navy wrap bracelet along with the navy vest to tie everything together in the cool color scheme.  The thick heel on these booties is perfect because it adds a heel without sacrificing comfort or walkability.  I love how this bag connects with both the brown watch and shoes as well as the navy in the top layers, I feel it ties up the outfit together nicely but still keeps it casual for a day of fun fall activities!  Anyone have any fun plans for the weekend?  Would love to hear about them!
