Jeans and a Cute Top

“Are you even a girl if you aren’t wearing ‘jeans and a cute top’?”  I saw that on twitter the other day and burst out laughing at work (…oops).  Unfortunately, that perfect outfit formula has been a real challenge for me some days, since my top section of my closet has always been my least favorite.  I’m more likely to wear a skirt with a casual tee (here, here, and here) than a really nice blouse with some jeans.  Having realized how lackluster my ‘cute top’ collection was, I set out to find those perfect pieces that could elevate a pair of jeans to the next level.  As always, Banana Republic did not disappoint me.

Deep Jewel Tones

img_5063 img_5111 img_5097

Before I started this blog, I pretty much exclusively wore bright colors regardless or trends, seasons, or other fashion rules.  As the years have gone by and I started to pay much more attention to trends and protocols, I couldn’t help but notice the special associations seasonal colors have.  This spring I dabbled in a lot of pastels, a way to tone down an outfit without losing any edge or excitement, and this fall it’s been a series of deep jewel tones such as olive, navy, burgundy, and aubergine.  The dark hues are seasonally appropriate, but their rich shades still allow some of that bold expression that I love.

Cinnamon Sweater

IMG_9804 (1)IMG_9787IMG_9782

I am totally obsessed with this cinnamon sweater from J.Crew Factory.  It’s the perfect color for November, especially when paired with other rich hues like this plum or a dark sage.  I happen to love it layered with a reliable chambray, so this week I’m going to be sharing the two ways I styled it for Thanksgiving week!

I knew right away that I had to layer this sweater under this Helene Berman cape I got last year (last seen here).  Capes are great for traveling, since they’re warm, comfortable, and chic all at the same time.  Swap out a pair of boots for some heeled booties and this outfit is ready for even the most discerning grandmother.
