Supporting Local Businesses

It has been MORE than a fair minute since I wrote a blog post, but as the Coronavirus has spread to impact everyone and everything, I have had my mind set on sharing some ideas on how we, as consumers, can support small businesses who may be suffering.  I  know a lot of people’s economic situations are up in the air right now, but if you have some discretionary income and are looking to do some retail therapy, here are some that I love and support, and think you should too.

A side note: if any of your friends have small businesses: likes, comments, follows, etc. are ALWAYS appreciated and helpful!  Brands are hard to grow in the beginning, and having that sort of following and engagement helps look more “valid” to future customers, brand partnerships, etc!  Engaging with them on social costs you zero dollars but means so much to them and can really help when trying to grow your own business.

Rockaway Candle Co.  I have been watching Morgan hustle nonstop on Insta Stories this week fulfilling orders, as she is still able to access her studio during social distancing.  Her candles are non-toxic, made of 100% cotton wicks and organic soy wax.  Also, candles make you feel better and when you’re at home 24/7, you need all the help you can get.

Niche.  My favorite plant shop in Boston, Niche is currently in the process of setting up their online shop.  Follow them on Instagramfor an update when they open: social distancing is a great time to devote yourself to your plants!

Seed To Stem.  Seed To Stem is everyone’s favorite Worcester plant shop, but you can still support them online right now.  Air plants are easy to ship, as are all the gift shop items.  I just ordered some Palo Santo to cleanse the negative energy out of our apartment, and an accompanying smudge bowl.

Loyal Supply Co.  For fun home decor items, cards, and more, there isn’t a better stop than Union Square’s Loyal Supply Co., who also sells lots of their goods online.  Personally, I’m eyeing the Fluff magnet and Boston penant.

Formaggio Kitchen.  These are dark times, and dark times require cheese.  I believe that in my core.  Formaggio ships Monday through Friday, as well as delivers within a 2 mile radius.

Corkcicle.  I know, I know.  But wait: Right now, when many stores are closed, Corkcicle is giving you the opportunity to buy your products on their website and select your local store to receive credit for the purchase of your item.  Just go to the checkout, and enter your local Corkcicle retailer there.

In addition to retail, the food service industry is hugely suffering, and there are two ways you can help: takeout/delivery and gift cards.

You have likely seen the idea of buying gift cards floating around the internet, but here it is again: buy purchasing a gift card to your local restaurant, you give them much needed cash to help pay their employees, their bills, etc.  Then save it for a night out in the future!

Takeout and Delivery are also still viable options.  Jessica Yellin has a great post about no-contact delivery that I will link here.   Yes, technically there are still risks, but not really any greater than buying your food at the grocery store.  Ultimately we are not at zero risk unless we are growing our own food.  And for most of us that’s not an option, so we can just try to be as safe and precautious as we can.

If you have any other thoughts on ways to help support local businesses, or if you have any that you love please share them in the comment section!

Lucky Me

Happy Hump Day everyone!  I’m super excited to showcase one of my favorite brands today – and one that’s pretty close to my heart.  I worked at Lucky Brand for a short time when I was 20, and I learned so much from my manager Evelyn, and really evolved my personal style a lot while I was there.  Now, I wear almost exclusively Lucky jeans and drag B into the store every time they have a sale!  (I also love the cheeky zipper detail on their jeans, which plays right into the title of this post!)  A couple months ago I bought this sweater (seen here and here) and completely fell in love with it.  After wearing it as much as I could, I rushed back to the Lucky website to buy a few more – including this fun olive one!  I think it will be perfect for The Killers’ concert I’m going to on Sunday!

Outfit Details – Sweater: Lucky Brand | Jeans: Lucky Brand | Booties: Marc Fisher | Necklace: Elizabeth & James | Earrings: Coach

Thanks so much for stopping by – hope you have a great day!

Hi everyone – Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a great time celebrating last night!  B and I are both battling colds, so we sat on the couch eating Chinese food and writing our resolutions for 2018!  Before I jump into any new content, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the state of TSC and fill you in on some of the plans I have for the new year!

When I first started The Sol Compass, I had no idea that it would wind up being so heavily fashion based.  I got pretty lucky in gaining traction pretty quickly with my fashion posts, and they are always the highest viewed content on the site.  With Instagram making it so easy to just skim through #ootd’s, I want to keep a place that you feel comfortable going to the way you would ask a friend for advice.  A place with deeper writing than an Instagram caption could provide. On that same note, I want to provide better content in some of the other areas I love outside of fashion.  I’m extremely passionate about skin care, so expect to see a few posts on that coming up soon.  I’m super excited to announce that I’ve also been working on creating more user friendly travel guides, which is something I’ve wanted to do since high school.  Some other ideas I’ve been toying with have been book reviews (reading was my first love), my favorite snacks (I am an avid snacker), grocery store hauls, and some small touches around the house that have allowed me to be more comfortable sitting still than I ever thought I would be.  Beyond all these things, my interests range from tech to quick and easy weeknight meals to finding the best date night itineraries.  If there’s anything you want to read about more, anything that can bring a little sunshine to your days, please leave me a comment or send me an email!  I would love to explore any suggestions and ideas you may have!

Now a quick little round up of some of my favorite posts from 2017!

I kicked off 2017 in Disney World with my family – and this post recapping all the outfits I wore is always one of my most visited.

B and I were running some errands after we shot this outfit, and six people told me they liked my coat that day.  At the time, it was two years old and from Target.  This was such a self five moment.  I recently broke my Perverse sunglasses that I was wearing in this post though, so pouring one out for them :'(.

I went outlet shopping with my mom and my sister, and absolutely fell in love with this dress.  I wore it nearly once per week for the rest of the summer.

I have wanted to take photos in front of this cool building for what seems like forever.  We finally made it over, and I made it my 17 Things You May Not Know About Me Post!

When I posted this outfit on Instagram, I got compliments on my dress, shoes, AND jacket.  Which is how I knew I did something right that day.

It’s nearly impossible to choose three top days of 2017, but if I had to they would be these three.

One: Nashville.

It’s hard to go wrong traveling with my sister, but this day was a special kind of something.  We woke up, got breakfast and coffee, then rented some bikes to take a not super safe ride from our hotel downtown out to the Parthenon.  Lots of Percy Jackson references were made, and we enjoyed the gorgeous late April sunshine walking around all morning.  We stopped and got lunch at J.Alexander’s, which was a family favorite on our regular Florida trips growing up.  We went out to Belle Meade, had a fun tour and a wine tasting, then hit up The Gulch to grab dinner with a friend, and ended the night on the roof of the Thompson Hotel at LA Jackson.  Many laughs were had along the way, and I am so thankful for this human.

Two: Colby Farm.

The sunflower field at Colby Farm never disappoints.  Despite having a full agenda for the day, I went through it feeling oddly relaxed and at peace.  B and I went to Newbury and Newburyport, saw the sunflowers, shot a few outfit posts, grabbed burritos for lunch, then made it back to head to Fenway with my family to celebrate my brother’s American Legion team making it to the world series (on his birthday!)  My brother’s talent on the diamond (he’s a pitcher) never ceases to amaze me, and I brag about him at every chance I get.

Three: Vermont.

B and I took a road trip all around Vermont for Columbus Day Weekend.  It was the perfect vacation that we needed.  We had no agenda and no real plan.  On our way to Woodstock off the highway, we spotted a sign for the Quechee Gorge.  I had somehow never heard of it (a fact both of our dads were surprised to hear when we got back), but I was bummed that I missed seeing the Flume Gorge up in the White Mountains when I was there a week before, so as soon as we saw the sign we popped a U-Turn and pulled into the parking lot.  It was so unexpected on our trek, we wandered around the trails and the gorge in amazement until hunger started to kick in and we continued on our way through the best aimless road trip I have ever been on.

Thank you all so much for following my blog and for sharing my adventures with me.  I hope we can share so much more in 2018!

12 Gifts of Christmas

Hello everyone, happy Friday!  Today I’m sharing a gift idea for the holidays!  B and I have a crazy Christmas weekend, with holiday plans and parties from the 22nd through Christmas Day, and I knew we wouldn’t have ample time to do a gift exchange, so instead I had an idea to give him a gift each day for the 12 leading up to that crazy weekend.

I got my kraft paperbaker’s twine, Sugar Paper ribbon, festive tissue paper, and classic bows from Target, and rounded it off with some washi tape from Amazon.  Lindt Chocolate Truffle Bars, a ski ornament I found at the Christmas Tree Shop, a simple red bell, and a pine branch made the perfect toppers for these gifts!

Lastly, if you want to go all out with the 12 gifts theme, these fun letters were the perfect finishing touch, whether you’re looking to control the order of the gifts, or just looking for a fun decoration!

Thanks so much for stopping by!  I hope you all have a great weekend!

The Perfect Holiday Gift with JORD

Hello everyone, welcome back!  Today I’m sharing the perfect holiday gift idea – a wood watch from JORD!

When he’s not hustling that cubicle life, B spends most of his time in his shop making projects for his side hustle – Think Wood Thoughts – or teaching me what kind of wood the restaurant’s tables are made out of.  I knew in an instant that a men’s wooden watch would be a grand slam gift idea for him to carry his hobby around with him all day, as both a token for himself and a killer conversation starter (how many unique men’s watches are actually made of real wood?!)

Walnut is B’s favorite wood, so I knew I was going straight to the five walnut options on JORD’s site.  I ultimately decided on the sleek and sophisticated Hyde series, but not before I found several others that would be great gifts for everyone I know!

When the package arrived in the mail, I couldn’t bear to wrap it up in cheap shiny paper!  The box itself is so beautiful, featuring a touch of technology in the humidity controlled drawer!  I love the detail paid in good packaging, and the beautiful job that JORD did gave me one less gift to wrap this year!

Whomever you’re shopping for this year, both the men’s shop and women’s shop have cool watches perfect for gifting everyone on your shopping list!

And now for my favorite part: JORD is offering 25% off for all readers of The Sol Compass!  Just click here and enter your email address, and your gift code will be sent straight to your inbox!

Thanks so much for reading!  Make sure to leave a comment below with who on your list would love a wooden watch from JORD!

This post is brought to you in partnership with JOAD. All opinions expressed are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that make The Sol Compass possible!

Hello everyone, happy Friday!  While I was playing softball in high school and college, the ‘groutfit’ was an athlete exclusive faux pas that resulted of an emergency gray sweatpants + gray sweatshirt pairing.  Today, however, I wanted to create a monochromatic ensemble with gray that was understated and chic, not born out of desperation to put on warmer layers during an outside practice!  I added my favorite black booties to keep the ombre effect going, and a burgundy bucket bag for a pop of color.

Outfit Details – Sweater: Banana Republic | Skirt: Banana Republic | Booties: Coach (old, similar here, here, and here) | Bag: Topshop (old, similar here and here) | Lips: Bite Beauty ‘Fig’, Marc Jacobs ‘Pretty Thing’ | Nails: OPI ‘Suzi – The First Lady Of Nails’ | Nails (toes): OPI ‘Barking Up The Wrong Sequoia’

Thank you so much for stopping by!  I hope you all have a great weekend!

Warby Parker Fall Collection

Hey everyone, welcome back!  You may remember in 2016 I gave a long winded speech here of how much I admire Warby Parker and how great it is that I have a platform to share their products. Their new Fall Collection is out, and I knew I had to show it to you all!!  (You can see the rest of the posts here, here, and here).  With such a great variety of eyeglasses and sunglasses styles to choose from, there’s an option for every face shape, style, and aesthetic out there!  I included some of my favorites below, I think the indigo and blush hues would go great with my current fall wardrobe!  What do you think?

Sunglasses Case Giveaway!

Hello everyone, welcome back!  A big congrats to Karla for winning last week’s Starbucks giveaway!  It’s so much fun for me to celebrate The Sol Compass’ third birthday with all of you!

This next giveaway is the product of a great need I have, and B’s unwavering patience.  My sister and I have been hoarding sunglasses in troves over the past two years, and we were recently brainstorming ways we could store them safely and functionally.  Luckily for us, B stepped up to the plate and tried his hand at creating a storage box for us, and the result was this beautiful handmade wooden box with a felt lining, to protect those lenses.  It’s one of the first items Bryan made for the Etsy shop he’s starting and today, I’m giving one away to you!  (Sunglasses not included, sorry ladies).

To Enter:
1) Follow @thesolcompass on Instagram!
2) Follow @thinkwoodthoughts on Instagram!

The Sol Compass turns 3!!

Hello everyone, welcome back!  I can’t believe that today is the third birthday of The Sol Compass!  Well, technically Monday was, but I didn’t post because of the holiday.  I had no idea what this blog would turn out to be when I started it back in 2014.  All I knew was that I wanted a place to document and share the things that I was inspired by.  I thought I would do a lot of food posts, what I was cooking and how I eat seasonally to stretch my dollars.  Or maybe share some places that inspired me in my travels.  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever believe I would have the artistic freedoms of creating content to inspire people or that I would some day get paid to get dressed in the morning.  This endeavor has been an absolute dream come true and I cannot thank you all enough for following along and fueling my passions.  You all create sunshine for me and I will never be able to thank you enough.

In celebration of The Sol Compass’ third birthday, I have three giveaways planned for you this month!  Without a big blogger budget they’re nothing huge but just something small to say thanks for coming along on this journey with me and for allowing me to do this thing that I love so much.

Today’s giveaway is all about the great love of my life… Coffee!  This journal and a $20 Starbucks gift card could be yours in just three easy steps!  The giveaway will run until Sunday, and next Monday (9/11) I’ll announce the winner and the next giveaway!!

To enter the giveaway you just need to follow these three steps!
1) Like The Sol Compass on Facebook!
2) Follow The Sol Compass on Instagram!
3) Leave a comment on this blog post when you’re done!

The winner will be announced in Monday’s post, and also contacted by email!  Good luck, and thank you for following along with The Sol Compass!
